Palm Beach Walk Chair Highlight: Cris Martinez

By Maddison Rametta

Cris Martinez is an award winning certified broadcast meteorologist at WPBF 25 News, serving on the Executive Leadership Team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Palm Beach and the Alzheimer’s Association Southeast Florida Chapter board.

Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease.

Mr. Martinez recently answered a few questions about his involvement in the fight to end Alzheimer’s.

How has Alzheimer’s impacted your life? Being heavily involved in my community I see or it hear it everyday. I’ve had a family member that had the disease, but it wasn’t talked about. My close friends know or have a family member battling the disease. It is more prevalent right here in South Florida, so I want to help #ENDALZ.

What made you decide to volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s? I want to help end the disease. It is unforgiving, and a detrimental disease that puts an emotional and physical stress on whoever it touches. We need to help find more treatment options and eventually a cure.

How do you hope to support your community as a volunteer? By using my power of advocacy. I can help spread the word that this is a disease that needs to end and how it affects a lot of folks right here in South Florida.

Why should someone sign up for Walk to End Alzheimer’s? This is a team effort. Finding a cure is tough but not out of the question. If we can all band together to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s we can get close to a cure.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your community? What do you like most about your community? I love participating in different events that we have here in South Florida. It’s a great way to meet people and spread the word about Alzheimer’s. I love how our community is resilient and willing to help out when there is a need. There is a lot of camaraderie here.
