Dementia Caregiver Tips: Finding LGBTQ+ Friendly Housing

When living at home is no longer an option, the process of choosing to send your loved one with Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia to long-term care housing is incredibly difficult. For the LGBTQ+ community this can be even more challenging. Research has shown older adults in this community face barriers due to lack of cultural competency, the reality and fear of discrimination or of not receiving optimal care.

According to a 2018 AARP study, 34 percent of older LGBTQ+ people worry they will have to hide their identity in senior housing.

Areas like Fort Lauderdale and Orlando are known for having assisted living communities welcoming to this community.

Jane Narducci, owner of Broward County/Treasure Coast Senior Care Authority, shares some helpful tips for those in the LGBTQ+ community who are searching now or in the future.

She recommends being honest when you speak with the salesperson and tell them what’s going on. Is the assisted living community friendly to the LGBTQ+ community? Are there PRIDE flags up or posters displayed?

Look for welcoming signs:

  • Is paperwork inclusive? If an intake form reflects the LGBTQ+ identities, there is a good chance the agency is actively thinking about equity and safety for LGBTQ+ tenants.
  • How do they talk about LGBTQ+ aging? Take note if they clearly articulate their support of the LGBTQ+ community (on their website, in marketing materials, and or conversation); look for for value statements that clearly reflect a commitment to diversity; and does their public-facing communications include explicit language affirming LGBTQ identity and measures they are taking to create a safe and affirming environment.
  • What are they doing to ensure safety amongst tenants, staff and neighbors? Having policies prohibiting discrimination, bullying and harassment should be prominently displayed or communicated to residents.
