Art4ALZ: Fluid Art Paint Pouring Coming to Southwest Florida

by Tammy DeCaro

Special paint pouring workshops are coming to multiple locations throughout SW Florida in March, April and May to support those living with Alzheimer’s and other dementia. Barrington Terrace, an assisted living and memory care residence in Naples, is hosting the events with all proceeds supporting the Art4Alz team fundraising campaign for The Longest Day celebration. As an assisted living residence administrator, an artist and nationally certified ADRD (Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias) trainer, I have a strong passion for raising awareness around the positive impact art has when it comes to clients with ADRD.

Why does art help those with ADRD?

The left side of the brain is often the most affected by ADRD, which is responsible for logic, sequencing, facts, executive decision-making skills, and reading/writing/math tasks. The right side of the brain is what some call the “fun” side, which is where imagination and creativity live along with rhythm, ritual and nonverbal cues. These areas are often less affected by the disease, which allows for some to express themselves through these creative forms, such as art or song. While the case may be that the individual is not able to communicate effectively through their verbal communication, the ability to communicate through these alternative ways is truly a phenomenon.

By structuring activities that are art and music-oriented for people with ADRD, you can connect with them on a different level – as comprehension of spoken words may be difficult, it may be worth trying to sing to them! Schedule artistic activities – as any type of art is especially helpful. Extend the simple joys that art can bring by also showcasing your resident work in the common areas or on their door. A simple act, activity, or gesture can go a long way in making someone’s day.

Art4ALZ The Longest Day events

The Longest Day is the day with the most light — the summer solstice. And it’s the day the Alzheimer’s Association calls on everyone to fight Alzheimer’s disease by raising funds and awareness for care, support and research.

We will host painting workshops in several community locations around Southwest Florida. DecoArt has generously provided the paint for these events and VITAS Healthcare is also supporting the event.  Anyone can participate. Donations will be encouraged for our The Longest Day team within the Gulf Coast to help raise funds for research, awareness and care. Follow us on social media to see the journey!

  1. Would you please consider an Art4Alz event in the Sarasota/Bradenton area of Florida? Seems like a fun and therapeutic way to raise awareness and funds!
